Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association, established in 1989 at Milikapiti, lies just back from Shark Bay, itself full of life, on Melville Island. Separated from Bathurst Island - the two making Tiwi Islands - Melville Island is separated to the west by the Apsley Straight, a tidal, meandering, crocodile busy seaway. 'Jilamara', meaning 'design' is owned by a committed group of artists who paint on canvas, paper and bark in natural earth pigments. Body design, ceremonial 'business' and the work of carving which includes Pukumani Poles for funeral rites, making of spears, birds, fish and spirit forms, are part of normal life.
