Mimi Aboriginal Art and Craft
Katherine based, wholly Aboriginal owned and controlled Mimi represents all of the communities and family groups in the Katherine region. This covers many distinct and unique art and craft styles from the desert to Kimberley, saltwater and freshwater people of the Top End and Arnhem Land. Missionaries encouraged the artists to use their creative skills in the art and craft field as a commercial activity, but it was’nt until the 1960’s that it would become a major source of rupia (income). Many items made are still used for practical and importantly, ceremonial purposes.
